Thodupuzha is the largest town in the district and is the commercial centre of Idukki district. It lies in central Kerala, southeast of Muvattupuzha. It lies almost at sealevel, with medium sized hilly regions spread allover the Taluk. It is 59 km from Ernakulam. It is a neat, quiet town and the cradle of religious harmony and peaceful co-existence., Christian churches, Hindu temples and Muslim mosques abound in Thodupuzha and co-exist next to each other. Thodupuzha is strategically placed as a gateway to the Highrange parts of the Kerala. Thodupuzha is not part of highranges, It is lowland with hilly regions spread across as against wide perceptions. Thodupuzha is a verdant land that attracts a number of tourists. The famous hydral project the Malankara dam is developing as a famous tourist centre.
Muttom is a satellite-town close to Thodupuzha at distance of 7 km from Thodupuzha. Muttom is home to the prestigious M.G.University College of Engineering, which is one of the most beautiful engineering colleges in the state. The serene Malankara Dam is situated here and is well connected by roads. The irrigation Dept. has plans to landscape the dam and it envisages setting up a garden as well. Visitors can stroll along the pathway atop the dam, which commands an overview of the greenery around. The reservoir is ideal for boating and fishing. Malankara reservoir is an artificial lake formed as part of Muvattupuzha Valley Irrigation Project. Kudayathoor Mala, a picturesque hillock 6 kms from Malankara dam site, is ideal for trekking, Elaveezha Poonchira, 6 kms upstream is another haunt for picnickers. Although Thodupuzha is primarily an agricultural belt, its achievements in the field of education have been at par with the highest achievements elsewhere.
